Golf Cart Rental & Safety Policies

To ensure a smooth pace of play and the protection of our course conditions, all players renting carts at Salt Lake City golf courses must adhere to the following guidelines.

        • Fees: Cart fees are charged per rider. Single-rider carts may be available upon request, subject to daily demand and course volume.
        • Operator Age: All drivers must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.

        • Cart Capacity: No more than two riders and two golf bags are permitted per cart.

        • Shared Rentals: Due to high demand and a limited fleet, players should expect to share a cart with another golfer in their group.

        • Fleet Limits: To protect turf health and manage traffic flow, each group is limited to a maximum of two golf carts.

        • Spectator Restrictions: To prioritize equipment for active players, spectator carts are not permitted.

Care for the Course and Safety

        • Restricted Areas: Carts are strictly prohibited within 30 feet of all greens, tees, and bunkers. Please keep all four tires on the designated paths near these areas.

        • Environmental Hazards: Avoid driving through tall "no-mow" fescue areas, wet turf, or recently repaired ground.

        • Path Only: During inclement weather or specific maintenance windows, carts may be restricted to cart paths only.

        • Braking: Ensure the parking brake is fully engaged before exiting the vehicle.

        • Personal Responsibility: The person signing for the rental is responsible for any damage to the cart or course property during their round.

        • Etiquette: Please remain seated while the vehicle is in motion and keep arms and legs inside the cart at all times.

If you need assistance obtaining a golf cart or GPS restrictions removed for greater on-course accessibility, please notify a staff member in the golf shop when you check-in.

        Rental Clubs

Elevate your game even if you left your sticks at home. We offer premium Callaway rental sets for golfers of all skill levels, available on a first-come, first-served basis in the golf shop. To ensure a quality experience for everyone on the course, please adhere to the following guidelines:

        Rental Guidelines

        • One Set Per Player: For pace of play and equipment management, every golfer must have their own set of clubs. Sharing a rental or personal set is not permitted on either course.

        • Identification Required: A valid driver’s license or credit card must be left in the golf shop for the duration of the rental.

        • Equipment Care: The player is responsible for the clubs from pickup until they are checked back into the golf shop. Please report any pre-existing damage before heading to the 1st tee. All rental equipment is the property of Mountain Dell Golf Course. Clubs must be returned in the same condition as they were received.

        • Availability:  Rental sets are available for both right- and left-handed golfers, as well as for men and women. If you are visiting during a peak time or require a specific set (such as junior or left-handed clubs), we recommend calling the golf shop at 801-582-3812 in advance to confirm availability.

        Fees

        • Premium Callaway Rental Set: $50 per 18-hole round / $30 per 9-hole round. Includes a sleeve of Callaway golf balls per 9-hole round.

        • Damage & Loss Fees: By renting equipment, you agree that your credit card on file will be charged the following rates (per club) for any missing or damaged items:

          • Driver: $300

          • Fairway Woods: $250

          • Irons: $100

          • Putter: $200

        Dress Code & High-Altitude Prep

        • Attire: We maintain a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. While traditional golf attire is encouraged, denim and casual athletic wear are acceptable.

        • Layers: Even if the valley is scorching, temperatures in Parleys Canyon are typically 5-10 degrees cooler. We strongly recommend a light windbreaker or quarter-zip for early mornings or when the canyon breeze picks up.

        • Sun Protection: At high altitudes, UV rays are significantly more intense. A hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and sunglasses are highly encouraged to prevent altitude-related fatigue and sunburn.

        Navigating the Terrain

        • Course Layout & Walkability: While we permit walking, please be aware that both courses feature significant elevation changes (nearly 400 feet on the Canyon Course) and extended stretches between certain holes. Most guests find a cart essential to enjoy the full experience

        Pace of Play

        • The 4-Hour Goal: To ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone, Mountain Dell encourages a pace of play of 4 hours.

        • Position Monitoring: Our GPS systems will automatically notify your group if you fall out of position. Additionally, our Player Assistants roam both courses to provide support and help everyone maintain a steady rhythm.

        Wildlife & Environment

        • Local Residents: It is common to encounter moose, badgers, and other wildlife on both courses. Please maintain a respectful distance and do not attempt to feed or approach the wildlife.

        • Protected Watershed: Mountain Dell sits on Salt Lake City’s primary drinking water source. We ask that all guests help us protect this resource by using the provided trash receptacles and staying on the course. Dogs are not allowed anywhere on the property, including the parking lot.

        HISTORY

The history of Mountain Dell is a fascinating tale of Salt Lake City’s expansion, environmental preservation, and the transformation of a rugged canyon into a world-class recreational hub.

The Early Days: Sheep and Steam

Before it was a golfer’s paradise, Parleys Canyon—where the courses sit—was a vital artery for pioneers and early settlers entering the Salt Lake Valley. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the land was primarily used for sheep ranching and as a right-of-way for the Salt Lake & Utah Terminal Railroad.

The area was named after the “Mountain Dell” station, a resting point for travelers navigating the steep climb to Park City.

Before the golfers arrived, the land was a small village with a school and a post office. By 1920, the city had purchased the properties to protect the watershed, effectively “depopulating” the canyon to ensure the purity of the city’s drinking water.

        1962: The OG Course

As Salt Lake City grew in the post-WWII era, the city’s Parks and Public Property department looked to the canyons to provide a “mountain escape” for local golfers.

        • The Landscape: Historical records from the Utah State Historical Society show the area as a rugged expanse of scrub oak and granite.
        • The Design: In the early 1960s, Salt Lake City commissioned William F. Bell, son of the legendary William P. Bell, to design the original 18-hole layout.

        • The Engineering: Building a course at 6,000 feet presented massive challenges. Crews had to carve fairways out of thick scrub oak and navigate the natural watershed that feeds the Mountain Dell Reservoir.

        • The Debut: When it opened in 1962, it became an instant sensation for offering a cooler, high-altitude alternative to the valley’s summer heat.

        • The Watershed Factor: The course was built specifically to coexist with the Mountain Dell Dam (completed in 1917 and expanded in 1925).

        A Legacy of Conservation

Mountain Dell is unique because it sits on protected watershed land. This status has shaped its history in two major ways:

        • Limited Development: Because the land is vital for the city’s water supply, you won’t see condos, hotels, or private homes lining the fairways. It remains one of the most “pure” nature experiences in Utah golf.
        • Wildlife Sanctuary: Over the decades, the course has become a de facto sanctuary. The history of the course is inseparable from the stories of golfers sharing the greens with the local elk and moose populations.

        1990: Doubling Down

By the 1980s, Mountain Dell’s popularity was so immense that tee times were nearly impossible to secure. The city decided to expand, adding a second 18-hole track.

        • The Vision: When the city decided to expand from 18 to 36 holes, architect William Howard Neff (often referred to as “Neff the Younger”) didn’t just build a new course. He took the original 18 holes designed by William F. Bell and divided them.

        • While the Lake Course stayed closer to the water and lower terrain, the Canyon Course was designed to “climb.” It utilized the natural “up-and-back” flow of the canyon, stretching four miles away from the clubhouse before returning.

        • The Canyon Course inherited 13 of the original holes from the 1962 layout. Five new holes were then carved further up the eastern canyon to complete the Canyon Course’s loop. The remaining original holes were integrated into what became the Lake Course

        • The Canyon Course kept the “soul” of the original 1960s track, the Lake Course was designed to be the more modern, technical sibling. The “new” holes were designed with a different philosophy—utilizing deep ravines, water hazards, and narrower, rolling fairways that required more precision than the traditional parkland-style holes of the original 18.

        Winter Wonderland

Since its inception, Mountain Dell has held a dual identity. While the Bell family designed it for summer greens, the community has historically claimed it for winter white.

Even as the course modernized, the city maintained the tradition of allowing cross-country skiing and sledding, making “The Dell” a year-round landmark for Salt Lake families. Today, the City partners with The Utah Nordic Alliance (TUNA), which grooms cross-country trails throughout the winter months.

        Modern Era & Resilience

In recent years, Mountain Dell has undergone significant infrastructure upgrades. These projects are funded primarily by the Golf Fund, which has become more financially resilient in recent years. By focusing on capital investments, the city aims to preserve Mountain Dell as a high-quality community asset that also serves as a critical open green space, helping mitigate urban heat islands and protect the watershed.

        • Parking & Paving: The parking lot was fully resurfaced in May 2023 to accommodate the heavy traffic from both golfers and winter recreationists.

        • Cart Path Overhaul: In July 2024, a multi-million dollar project was completed to repair and replace cart paths across all 36 holes, ensuring a smoother ride through the steep canyon terrain.

        • Tee Box Leveling and Construction: As part of a system-wide initiative, Mountain Dell’s tee boxes are being systematically leveled and widened. Priority is given to boxes with the most significant wear or settling caused by the harsh mountain winters.

        • Pump Station Maintenance: Recent budgets include funds for pump replacements and maintenance equipment to ensure the reliability of the water-delivery systems needed for the sprawling property.
        • Facility Improvements: Ongoing investments include clubhouse repairs, painting, flooring, and updates to HVAC and plumbing systems.

Despite the growth of nearby Park City as a luxury golf destination, Mountain Dell has maintained its identity as the “People’s Mountain Course”—offering rugged, high-quality golf accessible to everyone.

The history of Mountain Dell is etched into the very landscape of Parleys Canyon, transitioning from a vital pioneer pass to one of the most beloved public golf destinations in the West.
