Nibley Park opened in May 1922 after the Nibley family donated the land to Salt Lake City, is the oldest public golf course in Utah. Its central location has made it a popular destination for city dwellers and tourists, offering breathtaking views of the Wasatch Mountains. Fairways and greens are guarded by mature trees, many of which were planted before the early pioneers arrived in Salt Lake City.

    • Fees: Cart fees are charged per rider. Single-rider carts may be available upon request, subject to daily demand and course volume.
    • Operator Age: All drivers must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license.

    • Cart Capacity: No more than two riders and two golf bags are permitted per cart.

    • Spectator Restrictions: To prioritize equipment for active players, spectator carts are not permitted.

Care for the Course and Safety

    • Restricted Areas: Carts are strictly prohibited within 30 feet of all greens, tees, and bunkers. Please keep all four tires on the designated paths near these areas.

    Rental Clubs

Elevate your game even if you left your sticks at home. We offer premium rental sets for golfers of all skill levels, available on a first-come, first-served basis in the golf shop. To ensure a quality experience for everyone on the course, please adhere to the following guidelines:

    Rental Guidelines

    • Equipment Care: The player is responsible for the clubs from pickup until they are checked back into the golf shop. Please report any pre-existing damage before heading to the 1st tee. All rental equipment is the property of Forest Dale Golf Course. Clubs must be returned in the same condition as they were received.

    • Availability:  Rental sets are available for both right- and left-handed golfers, as well as for men and women. The Oldest Public Course in Utah

As the oldest public golf course in Utah, Nibley Park occupies a unique place in the history of Salt Lake City. Its transformation from private land to a "poor man’s country club" is a testament to the city's early 20th-century commitment to accessible recreation.

    Before Golf

Before it was a golf course, the 55-acre property was one of Salt Lake City’s primary destinations for entertainment.

    • Calder’s Park (1860s): Originally cleared by George and Mary B. Calder using oxen, the land featured a natural spring converted into a boating lake, a racetrack, and a dance pavilion.

    • Wandamere Amusement Park (1900s): The site was later improved and renamed Wandamere. It functioned as a popular resort and amusement park, complete with a baseball park and a merry-go-round, until it was eventually purchased by Charles W. Nibley.

    • The monument installed by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers placed near the practice chipping green along 700 E reads:

"In the early 1860s George and Mary B. Calder built one of the first amusement parks on this spot. They cleared the land with oxen, planted grass and trees and converted a natural spring of water into a lake for boating. It was spanned by a picturesque bridge. A dance pavilion, racetrack, ball park, merry go round and other attractions were built. In the year 1909 it was improved and the name changed to Wandamere. After changing hands several times, Charles W. Nibley purchased the resort and presented it to Salt Lake City for recreational purposes."

The Gift and Vision of Charles W. Nibley

The course owes its existence to Charles W. Nibley, a prominent local businessman and Presiding Bishop of the LDS Church. In 1921, Nibley donated the 55-acre tract of land—formerly used for farming and grazing—to Salt Lake City.

Having grown up in poverty after emigrating from Scotland, Nibley was passionate about making the "splendid outdoor Scotch game" accessible to the general public, rather than just those who could afford private country clubs.

His vision was revolutionary for the time: he stipulated that the land must be used as a public park and golf course specifically for those who could not afford the fees at private country clubs. Upon its opening in May 1922, Nibley Park became the first municipal course in the state, predating the nearby Forest Dale (which was a private club until the 1930s).

The course was officially dedicated on May 20, 1922. During the ceremony, Nibley expressed his hope that "generations of men and women yet to come shall find healthful enjoyment" on the grounds.

    Architectural Legacy

Designed by Harold B. Lamb, the course is noted for its strategic use of a relatively small footprint.

    • Natural Hazards: The design incorporates the property’s original water features, including a meandering stream and several small brooks.

    • The Ninth Hole: The course is famous for its unconventional finish, concluding with two consecutive par-3s. The 167-yard 9th hole requires an accurate tee shot over a large lake to a well-guarded green, often surrounded by local waterfowl.

    • Old-Growth Canopy: Many of the mature trees guarding the fairways give the course a dense, parkland feel that is rare for municipal tracks.

    A Century of Play

In 2022, Nibley Park celebrated its Centennial Anniversary. Over the last 100 years, the course has remained true to its founding mission of accessibility. It has served as the training ground for thousands of local players, many of whom started in its junior programs before moving on to collegiate or professional careers.

Today, the course stands as a preserved green space that bridges the gap between Salt Lake City's early pioneer history and its modern urban identity.
